Published less than a year before she died, Oroonoko is sometimes described as one of the first novels in English. She began writing prose fiction in the 1680s, probably in response to the consolidation of theatres that led to a reduced need for new plays. Behn, often cited as the first known professional female writer, was a successful playwright, poet, translator and essayist. Behn's text is a first-person account of Oroonoko's life, love, rebellion, and execution. The eponymous hero is an African prince from Coramantien who is tricked into slavery and sold to European colonists in Surinam where he meets the narrator. Oroonoko: or, the Royal Slave is a short work of prose fiction by Aphra Behn (1640-1689), published in 1688 by William Canning and reissued with two other fictions later that year.

Welcome to the Pretty B*tchin’ Kitchen, out April 25 from Dey Street Books, is not your typical Southern cookbook. Trisha Yearwood, with four books and a Food Network show, is almost as famous for her cooking at this point as she is for her music.īut the singer of hits like “Gunpowder & Lead,” “Mama’s Broken Heart,” and “If I Was a Cowboy” always struck me as a bit more sequins and bourbon than aprons and biscuits. Venturing into lifestyle and culinary publications is almost a rite of passage for the female musicians of Nashville: Martina McBride has two, Dolly Parton is working on her third, and Loretta Lynn’s You’re Cooking it Country is legendary. Brief Summary of Book: The Shadow Wand (The Black Witch Chronicles, #3) by Laurie Forest On his website, in 2013, Martin published an Arianne chapter wherein she heads for Griffin's Roost to see the young boy who is calling himself Aegon. Martin would not comment on Jon Snow's cliffhanger fate after A Dance with Dragons. Martin confirmed in March 2012 that the final two novels will take readers further north than any of the previous books: "What lies really north in my books-we haven't explored that yet, but we will in the last two books." He added, "you're definitely going to see more of the Others". Martin intends to resolve these cliffhangers "very early" in The Winds of Winter, saying, "I'm going to open with the two big battles that I was building up to, the battle in the ice and the battle at Meereen-the battle of Slaver's Bay. The previous installment, A Dance with Dragons covers less story than Martin intended, omitting at least one planned large battle sequence and leaving several character threads ending in cliff-hangers.
